What are stop words

In natural language processing, a stop word is a commonly used word (such as "a," "an," "the," etc.) that is filtered out before or after processing of text, as it is considered to be of little value in text analysis. These words are considered to be "stop words" because they do not contain important meaning and are usually removed from texts to increase the efficiency of the text analysis process.

Stop words are often used in search engines, text-to-speech systems, and other natural language processing systems including computer-assisted translation (CAT) software to improve performance.
